House Subcommittee Passes VA Ombudsman Bill.   Congress Daily (6/9, Leonatti) reported, "Citing the confusion veterans face when trying to arrange benefits," the House Veterans Affairs Health Subcommittee "passed a bill Thursday creating an ombudsman office within the Veterans Affairs Department." The bill, adopted by unanimous voice vote, "instructs the VA secretary to create an office of the ombudsman, and designate the head of the office. The office would act as a one-stop shop for information on benefits administered by the VA, including medical, housing and education." The VA "does not support the bill. VA Undersecretary for Health Michael Kussman testified at the Health Subcommittee hearing on the bill that it would create an unnecessary level of bureaucracy within the VA."

Older Veterans Assisting Younger Counterparts In Recovery Process.   On its front page, the Christian Science Monitor (6/10, Carroll) reports, "Using veterans who have recovered from psychological injuries to help others through the healing process is a novel...approach. " But there is "growing evidence of its effectiveness, " and it is "now gaining greater acceptance in the US and abroad." The Canadian government and the United Kingdom's Royal Marines "have both adopted" formal programs based on this approach. In the US, meanwhile, informal veterans groups are "helping a new and growing generation of veterans recover from psychological injuries that disrupt their lives and, at a growing rate, end them." The Monitor notes that the Department of Veterans Affairs "recently announced the creation of a panel to advise the agency on improving its suicide-prevention effort." The VA has also "created positions at each VA medical center to oversee suicide prevention and started a suicide hot line."
